Powerline networking, as the name suggests, uses your home (or offices) electrical wiring as a wired data network.
It’s a solution which is favoured in situations where WiFi signals are unable to penetrate very far into a building (for example, in old buildings with thick brick or stone walls), or where the use of Ethernet cables would be too unsightly and complicated.
Powerline kits provide you with the ability to turn your home’s electricity network into your own fast network to connect devices, no matter where they may be in your home, to the internet.
How do powerline adapters work?
Most powerline kits feature two adapters, which work in the following way; the first powerline adapter is plugged into the power socket nearest to your router. It’s then connected to the router using an Ethernet cable.
The second adapter (or more, if you live in a massive house) is then plugged into a power socket in another room. This adapter is then connected to your TV, desktop PC, laptop, or other internet enabled device using an Ethernet cable.
Voila! You now have a fully functioning network that’s running through the walls of your home. What’s more, you can extend the network as much as you want. Simply add further adapters in rooms as required.
What are ‘AC passthrough’ powerline adapters?
When shopping for powerline adapters, or powerline WiFi extender kits, you may see some labelled as ‘AC passthrough’.
AC passthrough means that a powerline adapter features a built-in plug socket.
This means that you can connect a plug to the rear of the powerline adapter, so that you can still draw power from your home’s electricity network. So, you can connect both the powerline adapter, and another device to a single plug.
