How to Buy the Best HP Laptop for You

When it comes to buying a new HP laptop, it’s easy to be overwhelmed by the sheer amount of choice on offer.

To make things easier, the CCL team have outlined their top HP laptop buying tips below.

Form factor

The first thing you’ll want to think about is the form factor of your chosen laptop.

HP laptops are available in a range of form factors, from the traditional clamshell configuration through to ‘2 in 1’ laptops where the screen can be detached for use as a tablet.

If you’re going to be doing quite a bit of desk-based work, and you’ll need plenty of screen ‘real estate’ in order to work on documents and applications, then the traditional clamshell form factor will probably work best.

If, on the other hand, you prefer to work in a more tactile manner e.g. using a stylus, then a 2-in-1 laptop will offer you the flexibility you desire.

Screen size

Once you’ve decided upon the form factor, you’ll need to decide what size screen you want.

When it comes to selecting the right size screen, it’s important to give some thought to how portable you want your laptop to be. For example, if you’re going to be travelling with your laptop a lot, then you’ll want a model with a screen between 12 and 14-inches in size.

If you’re going to be using your laptop as a replacement for a desktop PC, where you’ll be mostly working from a desk, then go for a model with a larger screen of between 15 to 17-inches.

Screen resolution

Related to screen size, is screen resolution. Screen resolution influences how easy it is to see the images and text that are being displayed on the screen.

In other words, the higher the resolution of your laptop’s screen, the sharper and clearer the words and images on the display will be.

Explore our range of HP laptops and you’ll find that the majority have 1920 x 1080 full HD resolutions, which is the ideal resolution for all round computer work, browsing the web and gaming.

If screen resolution is really important to you, for example if you’re a graphic designer or video editor, then it may be worth going for a HP laptop with a 2K (2560 x 1440) resolution which is sharper still.

Battery life

A key consideration when buying a HP laptop is battery life. If you’re going to be using your laptop on the go, travelling and working in various locations, then you’re going to want a laptop with at least 8 hours of battery life.

Here at CCL, we make it easy to find HP laptops based on their battery life. Simply go to the filter bar on the left hand side of this page and you will be able to filter our HP laptops based on their battery life.

You’ll even find some HP laptops and notebooks which have a battery life of more than 10 hours, making them perfect for computing on the go.

Storage

Depending on what you intend to do with your HP laptop, you’ll need to give some thought to its built-in storage.

If you’re mainly going to be working on the cloud via apps such as Google Docs, then you won’t have to worry too much about storage.

On the other hand, if you’re going to be working on video, image or sound files and storing them on your laptop, you’re going to need a fairly large amount of storage space.

Handily, HP laptops are increasingly coming with large-capacity SSD drives, which provide plenty of space to store files and applications.

Processor

The processor (or central processing unit - CPU) is effectively your laptop’s ‘brain’, responsible for coordinating all of the tasks that are required to keep your laptop and its programs running.

The more powerful your processor, then the better your laptop will run.

This is especially true if you intend to multitask on a regular basis, with multiple programs open at once.

We’d recommend going for a HP laptop that includes a multi-core CPU. Nearly every HP laptop we sell here at CCL, has a multi-core CPU - either from Intel or AMD.

Memory

Memory - also known as RAM - is your laptop’s short term storage. It’s where your laptop will store files and data that it needs to access really quickly - for example, a piece of data that’s helping an open program to run.

We would recommend buying an HP laptop that has at least 8GB of RAM. But, if you’re going to be using memory-intensive programs such as graphics editing suites, or playing games, then we’d suggest buying a 16GB HP laptop instead.

What accessories should you buy with a HP laptop?

Whilst your new HP laptop will come with everything you need in the box to start using it such as a HP laptop charger, there are a few extra accessories you may want to buy.

Laptop bag

When you invest in a new laptop, you’re going to want to keep it in top condition. Whilst most laptops are designed to be scratch and abrasion resistant, it makes a big difference if you keep them in a dedicated laptop bag

There are plenty of options to choose from when it comes to laptop bags, including traditional cases, briefcases, backpacks, sleeve cases and messenger bags.

Spare laptop charger

As anyone who travels around with a laptop regularly will tell you, it’s far too easy to lose your laptop’s charger.

Whether it gets left plugged in an outlet, or drops out of a bag, being without the charger for your laptop is a nightmare.

So, avoid that scenario by buying a spare HP laptop charger.

Mouse

If you’ve ever worked on a laptop, using only its trackpad for long periods of time, then you’ll know it’s not exactly comfortable.

That’s why one of the most popular accessories that people buy alongside a HP laptop is a mouse

Whether you go for a wired or wireless mouse, it’ll make using your laptop far more comfortable and easy.

Keyboard

Do you tend to type a lot whilst you’re working on your laptop? Then it’s worth considering investing in a separate keyboard

Not only are separate keyboards often more ergonomically comfortable, but they can save wear and tear on your laptop’s keyboard too.

Monitor

Should you mainly be working on your laptop at a desk - and only very occasionally taking your laptop elsewhere - then you can really enhance your working experience and productivity by buying a separate monitor

Investing in a separate monitor to go with your laptop can help to reduce eye-strain and provide a generally more comfortable working experience.

How much do HP laptops cost?

As one of the world’s largest laptop manufacturers, HP has a wide and diverse range, meaning that they have laptops that cover every price point.

Here at CCL, you’ll find HP laptops from as little as £260 through to top-of-the-range powerhouses that cost over £2,500.

Do you sell clearance HP laptops?

Yes. As one of the UK’s largest online retailers of laptops, we regularly have HP laptops amongst our clearance items.

We’d recommend checking our dedicated laptop clearance department on a regular basis. That’s the best way of picking up a bargain, cheap HP laptop.
