Samsung Monitor Buying Guide

When it comes to buying the right Samsung monitor, we understand that things can become complex, quickly.

There are so many different factors to think about, from screen size and resolution to refresh rates and response times.

So, to help you find the perfect monitor for your particular context, the team at CCL have detailed their top buying tips below.

One screen or two?

One of the first questions we’ll address is whether you should buy one monitor or two.

These days, it’s fairly common to see people using two monitors, whether it’s at home or in the office.

But, do you really need to buy two? And, are there any alternatives?

Traditionally, people bought two smaller 16:9 monitors as it provided them with more screen ‘real estate’ without the expense of buying a single very large monitor.

But, times are changing, and much larger Samsung monitors are becoming far more affordable.

In our opinion, whether you’re just a casual computer user or if you’re a dedicated graphic designer or hardcore gamer, it’s better to go for a single, large monitor (provided you have enough space on your desk).

Not only does a single monitor eliminate that annoying ‘bezel gap’ that you get when using two monitors, but it’ll provide a far more immersive, enjoyable experience.

If you do want to go for a single monitor, then the next thing you’ll need to consider is screen size…

Screen size, aspect ratio and resolution

Screen size, aspect ratio and resolution are inextricably linked. Here’s what each one means:

  • Screen size - this refers to the size of a screen based on the measurement of the diagonal from one corner to another. This provides a single number (usually displayed in inches), which tells you how big a monitor’s screen is e.g. 28-inch, 32-inch etc.
  • Aspect ratio - this refers to the difference between a screen’s height and its width. Aspect ratio is usually displayed as two numbers separated by a colon e.g. 16:9. To date, the majority of modern monitors have had an aspect ratio of 16:9, but monitors with much wider aspect ratios are now becoming popular such as 21:9 and even 32:9.
  • Resolution - this is a measurement of how many pixels your monitor’s screen can display. It is typically expressed by two numbers e.g. 1920 x 1080. These numbers refer to the number of pixels the screen has along its horizontal and vertical axis.

Getting a monitor with the right screen size, aspect ratio and resolution is key to having an enjoyable computing experience.

Luckily, Samsung offers monitors across a broad range of screen sizes, aspect ratios and resolutions.

To give you an indication of the breadth of Samsung’s range of monitors, the table below sets out some of their most popular available configurations.

Aspect Ratio 16:9 21:9 32:9
Resolution UHD (3840 x 2160)
QHD (2560 x 1440)
FHD (1920 x 1080)
WQHD (3440 x 1440) Dual QHD (5120 x 1440)
Super UltraWide (3840 x 1080)
Screen Size 22 inch to 49 inch 22 inch to 49 inch 22 inch to 49 inch

Whilst this isn’t an exhaustive list, it should give you an idea of the options available to you based on what aspect ratio, resolution and screen size you’re looking for.

As a general rule, you can expect a Samsung monitor to have a higher resolution the larger the aspect ratio and screen size (although there can be exceptions to this).

A note on resolution types

If you’ve just read the text above, you may be a little confused by all the different acronyms that are used in relation to resolutions.

If that’s the case, then don’t worry, as we’ve set out what each of Samsung’s resolution acronyms means below:

  • FHD - this is what Samsung calls ‘baseline full HD’ and refers to monitors which have 1920 x 1080 pixels.
  • QHD - this refers to monitors which have 2560 x 1440 pixels. This places such a monitor in between HD and 4K.
  • UHD - UHD is effectively another name for 4K and refers to monitors which have 3840 x 2160 pixels.
  • WQHD - this is a resolution which is similar to QHD, but has a slightly wider aspect ratio at 3440 x 1440 (compared to QHD’s 2560 x 1440).
  • Super ultra wide - as the name suggests, super ultra wide monitors have an exceptionally wide aspect ratio, however the resolution (3840 x 1080) is not quite as good as Dual QHD.
  • Dual QHD - Samsung were the first brand in the world to introduce Dual QHD which is a dual quad high definition of 5120 x 1440 pixels. This creates a monitor which is unbelievably wide!

Response times and refresh rates

Now if you’re just going to be using your Samsung monitor for general computing or content creation, then focusing on the screen size, aspect ratio and resolution is good enough and you can skip this section.

However, if you’re going to be gaming on your new Samsung monitor, then you’ll also want to pay attention to the monitor’s response time and refresh rate. These are two crucial factors when it comes to achieving a great gaming experience.

Response time

Response time refers to how long it takes each pixel on your monitor to turn from black, to a colour, and back again.

This is important as it determines whether the image on your screen blurs or not. In fast paced games such as first person shooters or racing games, the response time of your monitor can make a big difference on how you perceive the image being displayed on the screen.

Response time is measured in milliseconds (ms). For the absolute best gaming experience, you want to select a Samsung monitor which has a response time of less than 1ms.

Refresh rate

Linked to response time is something called ‘refresh rate’.

Put simply, refresh rate refers to the number of times per second a monitor redraws the image that’s displayed on the screen.

As you can imagine, the higher the refresh rate (i.e. the more times a monitor redraws an image each second), the smoother the gaming experience is.

The majority of Samsung monitors feature at least a 144Hz refresh rate which is ideal for gaming, however it is possible to get Samsung monitors which have even higher refresh rates that are in the 165Hz to 240Hz range.

Gaming monitor tech

Today’s Samsung monitors also feature some very nifty gaming-specific tech including FreeSync and G-Sync.

FreeSync and G-Sync

FreeSync and G-Sync are relatively new pieces of technology which are designed to synchronise the output of your computer’s graphics card with the output of your monitor’s display.

This technology helps to eliminate issues which have previously plagued gamers, such as tearing and ghosting. These issues occurred because the monitor effectively couldn’t ‘keep up’ with the graphics being generated by the graphics card. G-Sync and FreeSync solve this problem.

But you may be wondering why the two names?

The reason is that AMD and NVIDIA - the world’s two biggest producers of graphics cards - wanted to produce their own versions of this tech.

Whilst FreeSync (or Adaptive Sync) is compatible with all graphics cards, a monitor with G-Sync will only work with NVIDIA graphics cards. So, make sure you buy the right one!

Curved display

Whilst not necessarily a ‘gaming specific’ feature, curved displays have become synonymous with high-end gaming.

Why? Because a Samsung curved monitor display provides a deeply immersive experience, taking up more of your peripheral vision and drawing you deeper into the game.

Curved displays also provide a wider field of vision, which in some instances, can provide you with a competitive advantage…

What is quantum dot technology?

If you’ve read even a bit about Samsung monitors recently, you’ve probably heard that they’ve released a ground-breaking bit of technology called quantum dot.

It’s Samsung’s attempt to create monitors which can compete with LG’s much lauded OLED panels, which they have introduced in many of their top-of-the-line monitors.

Samsung is deploying their quantum dot technology in 4K monitor panels which combine OLED technology with a unique quantum dot material. The result, claims Samsung, is monitors which can display the brightest, most vibrant colours on the market, as well as the darkest pure blacks - which will create the ultimate visuals for gamers and content creators alike.
