How to buy the best Acer monitor
Are you looking for an Acer monitor but not too sure exactly what you need? Then read these top buying tips from the team at CCL.
Our expert team has set out the key things you should think about when buying an Acer monitor below.
Consider the context
The first thing you need to do is decide what you’ll be using your monitor for.
Are you just going to be doing some casual computing? Or are you a hardcore gamer? Perhaps you’ve been tasked with buying a load of new monitors for the office?
Whatever it is, it’s important that you consider the context in which you’ll be using the monitor as this will determine the types of features and display you’ll want to select.
For example, if you’re mainly going to be using your Acer monitor for gaming then you’ll want to prioritise refresh rates and response times.
If you’re a content creator such as a graphic designer, video editor or animator, then you’ll want to prioritise colour accuracy and resolution.
If you’re buying Acer monitors for an office, then you’re going to want a monitor with good all-round performance at a reasonable price point.
How important is image quality?
Do you really need cutting-edge image quality if you’re going to be working on Word docs all day?
When it comes to selecting the right Acer monitor for your needs, you should consider how much you’re willing to spend versus image quality.
For example, if you’re happy with plain old HD, then you can pick up an Acer monitor which will be perfect for all day work and/or general computing tasks for under £200. For most office applications, HD will suffice.
However, if image quality is important to you - if you’re a graphic designer or video editor for example - then you’re probably going to want to spend a bit more and get a QHD or WQHD monitor (these resolutions sit between HD and 4K, with WQHD essentially being a wider version of QHD).
QHD and WQHD monitors are also ideal for 1440p gaming due to their resolutions; 2560 x 1440 and 3440 x 1440 respectively.
Should you want to achieve the very best image quality - for example, if you’re getting into high-end AAA gaming - then consider purchasing an Acer 4K monitor with a resolution of 3840 x 2160. This’ll give you a monitor with exceptional image quality.
Ultimately, it’s about what’s suitable for the context in which you’ll be using your monitor, versus how much you want to spend. You don’t necessarily need to equip your office workers with widescreen 4K monitors if they’re simply going to be working on spreadsheets all day…
Size matters
How big is big enough? That’s a question you’ll need to answer if you’re to buy the right Acer monitor for your needs.

Whilst all this talk of aspect ratios can be a bit confusing, what you really need to consider is the overall size and dimensions of your chosen Acer monitor.
The size of a monitor is measured diagonally from corner to corner whilst aspect ratio simply refers to the difference between a screen’s height and width.
Another thing to consider is how the size of the monitor correlates with the resolution. Think of it this way; as the monitor gets bigger, the number of pixels per inch (PPI) will decrease - unless you buy a monitor with a higher resolution.
Ideally, you’ll want to achieve 109 pixels per inch. In other words, the bigger the monitor, the higher the resolution you’ll need in order to maintain image quality.
Below, we’ve set out the ideal size monitor for each resolution:
- If you’re going to buy a HD monitor, then the perfect size will be between 23-inch and 25-inch.
- If you’re going to buy a QHD monitor, then the perfect size will be 27-inch.
- If you’re going to buy a 4K monitor, then the perfect size will be between 27-inch to 43-inch.
To put this into context, if you buy a HD monitor that’s bigger than 25-inches, then you’ll find that the image quality isn’t as good. That’s because the number of pixels per inch is lower.
All of this technical talk aside, for many people the size of their monitor will be largely determined by the space they have available in their home. Which brings us onto our next point…
Monitor location and mounting
Where will you be putting your monitor? If you’re simply using it for casual computing or work, then you can probably place it on a desk and be done with it.
Acer monitors come complete with a set of feet or a platform which will keep the monitor stable - and, based on the height of your desk and seat - at eye level.
However, if you want to go for a more elaborate setup, such as mounting your Acer monitor on a moveable arm, then you’ll need to make sure you select one which is VESA mountable.
Panel technology
Depending on what you’ll be using your Acer monitor for, you’ll want to select one with a specific type of panel technology.
When we talk about panel technology, we are referring to the actual LCD display that is embedded within the monitor.
Without getting too technical, there are three main panel technologies; TN, IPS and VA.
Each panel tech has its own characteristics, with each type providing different levels of image quality.
In terms of image quality, the hierarchy of panel tech is as follows; TN < IPS < VA. That is, VA offers the highest image quality, but tends to be more expensive.

Gaming-specific tips
Should you be buying an Acer monitor for the express purpose of gaming, then there are a number gaming-specific things you need to look for; response time and refresh rate.
Response time
Response time refers to the amount of time it takes for a pixel to turn from black, to a colour, and back to black again.
What this means in real terms is that the faster the response time of a monitor, the less likely you are to experience the blurring of images whilst you’re gaming.
For the best gaming experience, you’ll want the Acer monitor you select to have a response time of 1ms or less.
Refresh rate
Refresh rate refers to the frequency with which a monitor refreshes the image on screen per second. This rate of frequency is measured in hertz (Hz).
The higher the refresh rate, the smoother the image will appear on screen.
Although you can get Acer monitors with refresh rates of 75Hz, we’d strongly recommend buying a monitor with at least a 144Hz refresh rate if you’re serious about gaming.
Curved display
One of the most popular trends in gaming monitors at the moment is curved displays; and, for good reason.
Acer curved monitors help to create a more immersive gaming experience, taking up more of your peripheral vision and drawing you deeper into a game.
Curved displays also provide a wider field of vision, which in games like first person shooters can provide you with a competitive advantage.
FreeSync and G-Sync
Until recently, many gamers experienced annoying visual errors whilst gaming. During fast-paced games such as racing simulators, they would often see tearing and ghosting on screen.
This was caused by the monitor not being able to ‘keep up’ with the output of the PC’s graphics card.
These issues have now been solved by AMD and NVIDIA - the two biggest graphics card designers in the world.
G-Sync and FreeSync help to synchronise the output of the graphics card with what you see on screen, eliminating tearing and ghosting and creating a smoother visual experience.
Note - Whilst FreeSync will work with both AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards, G-Sync is designed by NVIDIA and will only work with their graphics cards.
